"You'll find another job. Until then, I'll just... thin down the soup a little more. Don't worry, Mr. Bucket, our luck will change. I know it."
— Mrs. Bucket to her husband

Hellen Bucket (nee Barenett)[citation needed] first appeared in Roald Dahl's 1964 book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and appeared in both adaptions. She is the mother of Charlie Bucket and wife of Mr. Bucket.

In the book, she is the daughter of Grandpa George and Grandma Georgina, and the daughter-in-law of Joe and Josephine Bucket. In the 1971 film, it is mentioned Grandpa Joe is her father instead.

She had a brief singing stint in the 1971 Willy Wonka film and was played by Diana Sowle.

In Tim Burton's 2005 version, she was played by his favored actress Helena Bonham Carter.

Background[]

She and her husband live in a small wooden house which is cold in the winter from drafts. They both sleep on a mattress on the floor.

She is the cook in the Bucket family and her specialty, or perhaps her only, recipe is cabbage soup. She is a housewife and takes care of her son, parents and in-laws. As a result of having to care for so many people who need assistance, it does not seem she can hold a regular paying job and the family lives in poverty in a run-down house.

She is kind-hearted and very caring of her little boy, Charlie. She loves him with all her heart and even tries to make him eat her food since he’s a growing boy, but he refuses.

Cheer Up, Charlie[]

You get blue like everyone
But me and Grandpa Joe
Can make your troubles go away
Blow away, there they go...

Cheer up, Charlie
Give me a smile
What happened to the smile I used to know
Don't you know your grin has always
Been my sunshine;
Let that sunshine show...

Come on, Charlie
No need to frown
Deep down you know the world is still your toy
When the days get heavy
Never pitter patter
Up and at'em boy
Some day, sweet as a song
Charlie's lucky day will come along
Till that day
You've got to stay in strong Charlie
Up on top is right where you belong

Look up, Charlie
You'll see a star
Just follow it and keep your dreams in view
Pretty soon the sky is going to clear up
Charlie,
Cheer up Charlie, do
Cheer up Charlie
Just be glad you're you
